Psychology of Vision trainer Emily Chu, a resident of Vancouver, BC with her husband at her side, interviewed Chuck Spezzano on Oct. 30, 2020. Included among the questions was how did Chuck and Lency meet?
Chuck's answer is provided below. It should be pointed out that although he calls himself a "psychologist," he has never been licensed as such and was in fact fined by the State of Hawaii in 2004 for pretending to be one. His degree in "Professional Psychology," an exotic subject peculiar to the school he attended, was not accredited by the APA, meaning he bypassed national standards.
Although Chuck does mention that Lency was "still in another relationship," he omits the qualifier that she was also married at the time and was known as Lency Jones.
So basically they had a therapist-client business relationship that eventually turned romantic. And Chuck sent her to a card reader.
The entire tale, vague, incomplete, and Trumpish boasting as it is, does bring up a multitude of questions regarding his professional ethics and credibility in the counseling field. EC: So when I was telling people around that we were going to interview Chuck what kind of stories you love to know about? So the number one by popular demand is people would like to know how you and Lency first met.
CS: Lency tells this elaborate story. I will, in the interests of time, try to focus it [rubs his face in an agitated way]
EC: We have time. I don't mind. [all laugh] There, go ahead.
CS: So, I was working with a woman. I was living in San Diego then, and she had a friend of hers who had come to her Course in Miracles group and had alienated all of the men in the group and eventually left the group. And they had exchanged phone numbers and promised to get together.
But late one night, it was like 11:15 in Hawaii which nobody calls anybody at 11:15 at night unless it's very serious, and Lency woke up at the call.
She said, "I don't know why I called you, but I, I, I was rushing for the airport, I'm late for my plane and all of sudden I had to go to the phone, I just looked up your phone number and called you real quick." And Lency said, "What are you doing, where are you going?"
"Well there's this really great psychologist in San Diego and so I save up my money and fly over and do a double session with him and then I spend six months integrating it and then saving up my money and then fly back," she said, "so that's where I'm going."
She says, "Well if you're going to San Diego." And y'know she said, "Yes, I'm going to San Diego." She said, "Well, I'll be there in two weeks. Why don't you give me his number? Maybe I can get a session."
So the next day I found when I'm doing a double session that if I take a break in the middle back then if I took a tea break that we'd actually accomplish a lot more in the second hour than if we worked straight through.
So, y'know, we were just sitting down for the second hour and my phone rang. And I said to her, "I really have a strong feeling I'm meant to answer that phone." She said, "Well, go answer it." So instead of letting it go to message I picked up the phone and it was Lency. She said, "I'm going to be in San Diego in two weeks and my friend is having a session with you now and I would like to have a session then," and I laughed, 'cause my schedule was booked solid for the next two and half weeks.
I said, but let me look. And I looked and I said, "Somebody just before this session cancelled those two hours that you're asking for. It's the only time I have open in the next two and half weeks." I said, "You can have it if you like."
EC: Did you tell that person to cancel their session? [winks, laughter follows]
CS: I don't mess with the Tao. The universe has a much better plan than I could ever figure out.
So she showed up two weeks later and we did this work and she has a masters in rehab counseling so she knew the level I was working at 'cause we cleared some elements of the Oedipal conspiracy with her mother so that she said afterwards she was going home for Christmas vacation and she had the best visit she ever had with her mother.
When I put the tea water on I went into my other office and I said, "Listen, God, if you ever want me to get married I want one like this."
Now she was still in another relationship so I just supported her in that.
EC: So that was love at first sight.
CS: First of all she was surprised at how I looked. She thought that was against the law. And I thought she was so beautiful and attractive but so utterly sweet.
But I had a good friend of mine, a woman in her seventies who taught color psychology and color healing and meditation courses. She lived with the Tibetan monks for like fifteen years and spent thirty years teaching at two of the most prestigious art schools in the U.S. And at the end I said, "Y'know, I have this good friend, she's in her seventies and she's an amazing card reader, so much so that the King of the Gypsies gave her his personal deck because she was so psychic with cards."
So I called my friend. I called Pat. And she said, "Oh sure, any friend of yours, have her come over, I'll be happy to give her a reading." And so she laid out the cards and she said, "You know you're with some other guy you shouldn't have ever been with. You're just meant to be friends. Now Chuck, let me tell you about Chuck. He's really a catch."
EC: Did you pay the lady? [laughter]
CS: Like, y'know, you just trust the process.
