Love in Times of COVID

July 31, 2020

"Love in the Time of COVID" or "Love in the Time of Coronavirus," are terms that are inspired by the 1985 novel El amor en los tiempos del cólera (Love in the Time of Cholera) by Gabriel García Márquez. In a short amount of time the reference to this work in regard to our present pandemic has already become a tired cliché, but no one who is paying attention or performed critical research has ever given either of the Spezzanos points for originality.

It isn't really the online workshop that interests us, nor is it the blatant steep multilevel hierarchy it spells out-- instead it is the list of trainers at the end of the form. This is the first time in 2020 we have a complete list of who they are. Even the Psychology of Vision website lacks a 100% roster.

Also of interest are the continued typos and errors in the names of some of their own trainers, mistakes that appear to be embedded in their template and no one has ever bothered to correct them. This brings us to two conclusions: First, the low regard in which the trainers are held by the Spezzanos, and second the always present lack of professional quality control and oversight in this slipshod enterprise. For example, check out their "Card of the Day" for a copious gallery of glitches and typos.

Love in the Time of Cholera is a great novel, by the way, and contains more useful life lessons than any "workshop" by the Spezzanos. Plus, it won't cost and arm and leg to read!
